Wi-Fi has become a thing of the past since the Li-Fi stepped into the arena of wireless world. You must be thinking what this Li-Fi is! Light Fidelity, apparently known as Li-Fi, is a high speed wireless technology much identical to the Wi-Fi. It transmits the data to the internet users using visible light communication. Li-Fi is 100 times faster than the available current speeds of internet. Invented by Herald Haas, a professor in the University of Edinburgh in 2011, Li-Fi is in the process of being tested in the industrial environments and offices by the scientists.
However, Li-Fi is not likely to replace the existing Wi-Fi any-time soon as abandoning theexisting technology altogether does not seem feasible but both the technologies could be used in tandem to provide more secure and fast networks to the users. Li-Fi requires mandatory apparatus to work such as standard light source which could be an LED bulb, a photo detector and an internet connection.
Being an innovative and new method of delivering data, Li-Fi can proffer speed of up to 1 Gbps (Gigabit per second). Because it does not use radio signals to transmit data, one of the advantages of Li-Fi is that it does not interfere with other radio signals and thus can be best utilized while flying and where interference is an obstacle. Another notable advantage of Li-Fi is it is a highly secured data transferring system as visible light cannot pass through walls. However as it has, every coin has a flip side and with numerous advantages of technology there comes disadvantages too. Li-Fi cannot be used outdoors in direct sunlight as it would result in susceptible interference with the signals.
No doubt that this Wireless light technology is going to revolutionize the internet industry and Convergence Labs are meticulously putting in their best efforts to help bringing this massive technological change.
